Schools begin baseball, softball seasons

The beginning of March means baseball and softball teams at local high schools are finishing up non-league games and getting ready to start the league seasons.

The King City Lady Mustangs wrapped up the basketball season with a win and a loss in the Central Coast Section Division IV Playoffs.

Falcons beat Mustangs, 79-59

A tall Scotts Valley Falcons basketball wore down the King City Mustang basketball team in the second half to win the first round Central Coast Section Division IV contest at Scotts Valley, 79-59.

Grey beats Blue in CTF game

A 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brett Baker to receiver Tony Amezcua in the third quarter held up as the Correctional Training Facility at Soledad Grey football team defeated the CTF Blue team 14-6 at Saturdayā€™s Blue/Grey Game at Greenfield High School.

Mustangs survive Bruins, 59-58

Leads of five to 12 points kept disappearing on the host King City Mustangs in their 59-58 win against Greenfield on Feb. 14.

King City Ponies win league title

For the first time since 1969 the King City High Pony basketball team won the Mission Trail Athletic League frosh boys championship.

Lady Mustangs sweep Stevenson

The King City High School girls basketball team completed the regular league season in convincing fashion, defeating Greenfield and defending champion Robert Louis Stevenson to finish with a 12-2 record.

Lady Mustangs beat rival Spartans, 53-48

Trailing 14-12 on the road to Gonzales inspired the King City Lady Mustangs to toughen up defensively and keep the Spartans scoreless in the second quarter. Gonzales fell behind at the half, but kept the game close though King City prevailed, 53-48.

Hawks soar past Mustangs, 74-53

The size and speed of the Oakwood Hawks was too much for the host King City boys basketball team to overcome, as they lost 74-53 on Feb. 6 to the Morgan Hill based team.

Lady Aztecs tame Mustangs

Three players scored in double figures for Soledad High as they knocked King City out of a first place tie in the Mission Trail Athletic League with a 49-34 home victory on Jan. 31.
