KING CITY — Hartnell College softball player Malaya Carrillo of King City will be taking her softball skills to Nebraska Chadron State College this fall.

Carrillo, the 20-year-old daughter of Artie and Crystal Carrillo of King City, played softball for four years as a Lady Mustang at King City High and two years as a Hartnell Panther.

“My decision was made to attend school at Nebraska Chadron because I will have the opportunity to continue playing softball and attain the major I want to complete,” she said. “It was the only school with softball that offered the Health Science and Radiology programs. My mind was made up because the field of study was available there and because one of my friends from Greenfield attends there and she is on the wrestling team and had good things to say about the school. I have not visited the school but have taken virtual tours of the college online. Softball is doing reconstruction of the outdoor facilities and they have an indoor facility also. I will have a chance to be an outfielder there.”

Carrillo will be the first woman from California that has been recruited to play softball at Nebraska Chadron. At Hartnell, she pitched her first year as a Panther but was moved to the outfield because of her strong throwing arm.
