More than 70 firefighters helped battle a 25-acre vegetation fire Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of Highway 198 and Pine Valley Road, east of King City.

The Southern Monterey County Foundation (SMCF), an affiliate fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County, has granted $20,000 to nonprofit organizations providing a variety of community-based services aimed at improving the quality of life for South County residents.

Thanksgiving is not only a time to gather around the table with family and friends, but it is also a time to reflect on the past year and give thanks. In the spirit of the holiday, South County Newspapers asked local officials, residents and youth what they are thankful for this year.

King City earned a five-star rating out of a possible 10 stars and was specially recognized for its community vitality by the 2018 America in Bloom National Awards Program.

King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture recognized a few of the city’s finest residents last Saturday during its Annual Awards Dinner.

Community members gathered Friday afternoon to celebrate the completion of King City’s new entrance sign and landscaping project at the corner of Broadway Street and San Antonio Drive, one of the city’s main intersections.

King City honored the community’s Mexican heritage last Sunday at the annual El Grito Celebration, which kicked off with a parade along Broadway Street featuring a procession of horses, bands and dancers.
