KING CITY — King City honored the community’s Mexican heritage last Sunday at the annual El Grito Celebration, which kicked off with a parade along Broadway Street featuring a procession of horses, bands and dancers.

The parade ended at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, where the fiesta continued with the historic shout or “El Grito,” live entertainment, a flea market, children’s activities and food and produce vendors.

The annual El Grito Celebration — a collaboration between King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, Salinas Valley Fairgrounds and local community members — also recognized King City resident Sonia Chapa, who received the Lifetime Community Champion award, and King City High School senior Julissa Trujillo, who was named the recipient of the Rising Star Award.

Both women demonstrate Hispanic pride through their community service and leadership in the city.
