
KING CITY ā King City Police Department is mourning the unexpected passing of Police Sgt. Ryan Kenedy, who died while on duty March 25 at about 12:45 a.m. after experiencing a medical emergency.
An 11-year veteran of the King City Police Department, 42-year-old Kenedy began his distinguished career in July 2014, initially serving as a patrol officer. He was promoted to police sergeant in January 2020 and was also assigned to the South County Major Crimes Unit and later the King City Police Department Investigations Unit.
Kenedy was known for his intelligence, care and humility, earning him deep respect and affection from colleagues and the community alike.
āSergeant Kenedy was universally loved by all he worked with,ā stated the King City Police Department in a news release. āHis passing is an immeasurable loss.ā
The County of Monterey joined the King City Police Department in mourning Kenedyās tragic passing.
āHe will be greatly missed by family, friends, colleagues and the community he served,ā officials noted. In honor of Kenedy, the County has lowered its flags to fly at half-staff until he is laid to rest.
Gov. Gavin Newsom also shared his condolences, stating, āMy wife, Jennifer, and I mourn alongside the King City community over the sudden passing of Sergeant Kenedy. Our hearts are with his loved ones and colleagues.ā Flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space were likewise flown at half-staff in remembrance of Kenedyās service.
Monterey County Sheriffās Office stated that it was ādeeply saddenedā by the loss, adding, āWe extend our heartfelt condolences to the King City Police Department, as well as to Sergeant Kenedyās family and friends.ā
Sheriff Tina Nieto honored the fallen officer, saying, āThank you to all the personnel that responded early this morning to assist our brother in arms with the initial call and handling radio calls for King City, both last night and today. Thank you to all the agencies and everyone who responded to escort Ryan to the coronerās office with honors. Rest in peace brother.ā
King City Police Department also expressed gratitude to Monterey County law enforcement partners for stepping in to provide necessary patrols, allowing its āKCPD family time to mourn our brotherās loss.ā
Kenedy is survived by his wife and parents. A funeral service is planned for Thursday, April 3, at 10 a.m. at San Carlos Cathedral, 500 Church St., in Monterey.
