The Fourth of July is almost here and the day is filled with events for residents of King City, Greenfield, Soledad and Gonzales.

Come celebrate Independence Day with King City on Tuesday, July 4, beginning with the annual parade at 10:30 a.m. along Broadway Street and ending with the fireworks show at dusk at the Stampede Grounds off San Lorenzo Avenue.

Scheid Family Wines announces winners of 2019 writing contest

Scheid Family Wines has announced the winners of the 2019 Scheid Writing Contest, which distributed $17,350 in scholarships this year to graduating seniors from King City and Greenfield high schools.

King City Police Department is currently investigating the city’s fourth shooting in just over a week, circulating a photo of the latest incident’s suspect vehicle taken from security cameras.

King City Community Power launches service Monday

King City Community Power, a local electric energy service, is set to launch next week with the City of King now becoming the default electric power provider for the community in partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), which will continue to transmit and bill for the power.

Loud cheers erupted Friday morning as King City High School Mustangs Class of 2018 took the field at War Memorial Stadium for the final time at its commencement ceremony, during which approximately 203 seniors tossed their caps in the air in celebration of their graduation.

Scheid Vineyards installs wind turbine

A new wind turbine with blades reaching nearly 400 feet into the sky was erected last week at Scheid Vineyards, where the machine will generate 100 percent of the power needed to run the winery and bottling operations four miles south of Greenfield.

A new service in Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties allows people to contact 911 centers via text message.

King City earned a 3 out of 5 bloom rating and was specially recognized for its heritage preservation at the 2017 America in Bloom National Awards Program, the results of which were announced over the weekend at the annual awards banquet in Holliston, Mass., on Oct. 7.
