Mission San Antonio hosts Annual Cutting of the Roses

Historic Mission San Antonio de Padua, established in 1771, will host its Annual Cutting of the Roses and Brunch on Sunday, Jan. 28, where those in attendance can take home a treasure from the Mission’s beautiful Padres’ Garden.

Red Cross volunteers install smoke alarms in South County

American Red Cross volunteers helped 79 homes in King City and Chualar become safer last Saturday by installing 271 smoke alarms and educating more than 300 residents as part of the nonprofit organization’s nationwide ā€œSound the Alarm, Save a Lifeā€ campaign.

CHP officers awarded for heroic act

King City Area California Highway Patrol Officers Andrew Lamar and Brock Veillette recently received the Medal of Valor Award, the state’s highest honor bestowed upon its employees, for their 2015 heroic act in rescuing several car crash victims along a steep, densely wooded hillside at night.

Under surveillance

Members of the community were invited to an open house last week at the King City Police Department to get an up-close look at the City of King’s new citywide security camera system and celebrate the completion of the nearly half-million dollar project’s first phase.

HEROES OF HOPE

Hundreds turned out this past weekend to show support for the sixth annual Relay for Life of King City, which has raised more than $58,000 so far in donations this year for the American Cancer Society.

Monterey County Health Department wins award

Items sought to send to hurricane-stricken Puerto Rico

King City residents Bruce and Ana Greenberg are collecting items from the community to send to Puerto Rico, which was devastated last month by Hurricane Maria, the strongest storm to make landfall there in more than 85 years.

Living the suit life

When Laina Babb learned to sew at age 6, she never imagined it would lead her to the opera. She has made her love of sewing into a career, first training and then apprenticing as a tailor. Now, as LA Opera’s head tailor, Babb manages a team of up to six tailors (depending on the show). Together they craft all the men’s suits used in the company’s productions in downtown Los Angeles.

Former King City resident shares journey to sobriety

The road to sobriety is not easy, but Steve ā€œMoeā€ Modena shows that it can be done. Modena, a former King City resident, came to Sun Street Centers in Salinas to ā€œsober upā€ in 1999.
