SOUTH COUNTY — Local girls and boys soccer teams began the second week of non-league play last week in preparation for league play that will start in January. Seven of the South County teams will continue playing in the Mission Trail Athletic League while the Gonzales girls will move to the Coastal Division.

  

GIRLS

Gonzales is 0-2 in non-league play after a 10-0 loss to Pajaro Valley on Nov. 29 followed by a 3-1 setback on Friday against the Santa Catalina Cougars. Susana Tejeda put the Spartans up 1-0 to start the game with Santa Catalina. This week the Spartans hosted Robert Louis Stevenson (yesterday), and will host the North Salinas Vikings tomorrow at Dick Force Stadium.

The defending MTAL champion Soledad Aztecs are 0-2 after losses last week to Watsonville and Monte Vista Christian in the 12th Annual Watsonville Soccer Tournament. On Nov. 28 the Aztecs lost 2-0 to the Wildcatz and were shutout 4-0 on Saturday against the MVC Mustangs. Soledad continued tournament play yesterday against Santa Cruz.

Greenfield began the season with a 2-0 win over North Salinas. Katie Martinez and Lucero Martinez scored goals for the Bruins. Greenfield (1-0) played Anzar yesterday and play in Salinas tomorrow against the Everett Alvarez Eagles.

The King City Lady Mustangs lost 5-1 on Nov. 27 to Everett Alvarez and will play Pajaro Valley, Pacific Collegiate, and North Monterey County in the Watsonville Tournament.

  

BOYS

The defending MTAL champion Gonzales Spartans lost 2-1 to North Salinas on Nov. 28 and had a home game with Anzar cancelled and rescheduled for another because of transportation problems for the Hawks. Gonzales play tomorrow in Salinas with Palma and will not play again until a Dec. 12 game at Salinas High.

Last Thursday the Greenfield boys lost 5-1 to the San Benito Haybalers (Hollister). Henry Flores scored the Bruins lone goal. Yesterday the Bruins played at Palma and will play on Dec. 11 against Anzar in San Juan Bautista.

The Soledad boys are 2-0-1 at the start of non-league play. Soledad defeated Salinas High 3-1 on Monday November with two goals by Carlos Esqueda and one goal by Alexis Sanchez.

Last Friday the Aztecs host the Monterey High Toreadores and the game finished in a 1-1 tie. Sanchez score the Soledad goal. The Aztecs will host Pajaro Valley tomorrow and complete the week with a game tomorrow with the Watsonville Wildcatz.
