Greenfield police to conduct DUI checkpoint

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence and driver’s license checkpoint from 6 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, at an undisclosed location within city limits.

Checkpoint locations are selected based on data identifying areas with a history of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the department. Officials said the primary goal of the operation is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

Police reminded motorists that impairment can result from more than alcohol consumption. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

The department noted that a first-time DUI conviction can result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, in addition to a suspended driver’s license.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided through a grant from the California Highway Patrol’s Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program.

Entries open for Industrial Calf Dressing competition

SALINAS — Entries are now being accepted for the 2026 Industrial Calf Dressing competition at the California Rodeo Salinas, organizers announced.

Presented by West Coast Community Bank, the competition allows nonprofessional rodeo contestants to compete for a Salinas belt buckle and bragging rights.

The event features three-person teams sponsored by local businesses that race to dress a large calf in oversized Wrangler jeans as quickly as possible without harming the animal.

The top three teams from the July 16-18 performances will advance to the championship round on July 19. Entry forms must be submitted by July 1, and contestants must pick up back numbers at the rodeo office by July 8.

Organizers encourage returning and first-time competitors to enter early, as the event typically fills up quickly. More information and entry forms are available through the California Rodeo Salinas website carodeo.com/events/2026/calfdressing.
