There is a distinct fear that only a parent can understand: the moment the phone rings signaling a medical emergency.
In January 2023, Darlene Noriega answered that call. Her oldest son, Zion, a vibrant student and athlete at Soledad High School, was suffering from a spontaneous pneumothorax, a condition where a lung collapse leaves a person suffocating as air pressure crushes the organ.
When a teenager’s life hangs in the balance, every second is a countdown. Darlene took her son straight to the Emergency Department at Mee Memorial Hospital in King City.
“I believed the ER wait time would be much less than taking him to the hospital in Salinas,” she said. “And I was correct, because Mee Memorial staff saw him within a minute of arrival.”
Upon arrival, Zion was met by the Emergency Room team, who rapidly assessed the crisis and jumped into action to stabilize him. But Zion’s lung continued to collapse over and over again. The crisis was escalating, demanding immediate, highly specialized surgical intervention.
In many rural towns, panic can deepen as families wait for a transfer. But Mee Memorial had the expertise Zion needed, and Dr. Gilbert Flores stepped in.
Dr. Flores completed the critical procedure necessary to halt the collapsing cycle and save the young man’s life. And as the surgery saved Zion, the hospital staff’s care and attention saved Darlene’s peace of mind. “Many scary things took place during those few days,” Darlene remembers. “But I always felt supported by each and every staff member who entered my son’s room.” This high-stakes care highlights the commitment and culture at Mee Memorial.
Zion went on to graduate from high school and is now serving in the U.S. Navy.
Today, Mee Memorial’s six-decade history serves as a powerful reminder of why this hospital exists. It is a photograph sent by Darlene of her son, smiling and strong, his life fully restored. “Thank you, Dr. Flores, Dr. Slaughter, and all the nurses for using your gifts to save my son,” Darlene wrote. “My heart is overwhelmed.”
From a regular visit with your doctor to an X-ray, surgery or the thunder of a medical helicopter lifting off, Mee Memorial remains the heartbeat of rural South Monterey County, here every day, with the life-saving care that is necessary for a rural community to thrive.
