Football | Passing league contests begin for South Monterey County teams

King City High to host games today at War Memorial Stadium

SALINAS VALLEY — Football returns to South Monterey County high schools Wednesday with the first seven-on-seven passing league contests.

King City High School will host the games at War Memorial Stadium starting at 5 p.m. and will welcome players from Greenfield, Gonzales and Soledad high schools.

With Covid-19 closing down most of the high school sports seasons, the summer passing league did not take place in 2020. This year the passing league will follow Covid protocols as the State of California is still recovering from the pandemic.

This spring King City was able to compete in four football contests against some tough competition, and Greenfield had one scheduled contest against the Pacific Grove Breakers.

“I’m just happy that my returning players got some quality game experience against some top-notch teams,” said Mustangs Head Coach Mac Villanueva. “We won’t see any teams of the caliber this season.”

The Mustangs played games in the early spring against Carmel, Palma, San Benito and Rancho Contate.

After Wednesday’s games at King City, the four South Monterey County football teams will play in Greenfield on July 7, Soledad on July 14 and Gonzales on July 21.
