SALINAS VALLEY — King City High baseball team improved to 6-0 in the Cypress Division after wins last week over the Seaside Spartans.
The Mustangs won by a 19-0 score on the road last Monday, and swept the series against Seaside with a 16-0 shutout.
“We allowed just one hit across both games, highlighted by Joey Pina’s 13 strikeout, one hit performance in game one,” said King City head coach Gabriel Soto. “Joaquin Sabala followed with a strong outing in game two, striking out seven batters over 3.2 innings, while RJ Ayon added three strikeouts in relief to secure another shutout.”
Offensively, King City stayed aggressive and consistent at the plate. Dylan Conaster led the way with a combined eight runs batted in the two games, while Logan Tankersley and Ernesto Aguirre each contributed key hits and RBIs throughout the series. Jacoby Chavez and Axel Chavez helped set the bar at the top of the lineup with multiple hits, stolen bases and constant pressure on the defense.
As a team, the Mustangs combined for 35 stolen bases, showcasing their speed and aggressive style of play, and also playing clean, error-free defense.
With the pair of wins, King City has now won eight straight games and continues to build momentum heading into this week’s matchups against Everett Alvarez on Tuesday (after press deadlines) and Alisal at home Thursday.
Gonzales High won two games in a row to improve to 1-3 in the Cypress Division and are 2-4 overall.
Last Monday Fernando De Leon earned the 19-0 win on the mound at Pajaro Valley. De Leon gave up zero hits and three runs (one earned) over four innings and walked four. The Spartans piled up nine hits. Luis Cabada, Noah Villalobos and Dom Rosas-Rosillo each collected two hits.
Last Thursday Gonzales beat the Grizzlies 18-1 at home.
Rosas-Rosillo collected four hits in four at bats. Matthew Martinez earned the win for Gonzales, allowing zero hits and one run over four innings and had a total of four strikeouts. Gonzales collected 14 hits as a team.
The Spartans hosted Marina on Tuesday night and will play at Marina on Thursday afternoon.
Greenfield went 1-1 for the week, falling 4-1 to Rancho San Juan at home and beating the Alisal Trojans 1-0 at home. The Bruins are 5-6 in the Mission Division and 11-7 overall.
In the loss to Rancho San Juan, Nathaniel Trujillo took the loss and finished with three strikeouts. Daniel Nava had a single and RBI.
In the shutout against Alisal, Fabian Gonzales was the winning pitcher and had five strikeouts in seven innings. Gonzales helped his own cause with two hits and Isaac Ramos scored the winning run.
The Bruins played at Alisal on Tuesday and will host the Everett Alvarez Eagles on Thursday in Salinas.
Soledad started the week with a 7-1 win at home against North Salinas, lost to Monterey in an away game 8-1, and defeated the Toreadores, 8-7, last Friday.
Ethan Sanchez went six innings to earn the win against North Salinas and finished the game with 14 strikeouts. Daniel Valenzuela had two hits and three RBIs and Juan Esparza added a home run and was credited with two RBIs.
The Aztecs are 8-9-1 overall and 3-9-0 in the Gabilan Division with games this week at Palma on Monday, then Palma on Wednesday afternoon in Soledad and a home game on Friday against Hollister.
