KING CITY — With one game remaining to play in the Cypress Division, the King City girls’ basketball team finds itself in third place with a 9-4 league record.

The Mustangs began the season at 0-10 but have played solid basketball with the scoring and rebounding of senior players Janesa Lopez and Amita Hearne.

“We’ve had good play and leadership from the veteran players, especially when we started the division games,” said King City first-year head coach Angel Trujillo. “We started out the year struggling in preseason as the schedule was tough. The veterans and the improvement of sophomore Alizah Carrillo and freshman Crystal Paramo got our team playing competitive basketball.”

In games last week, the Mustangs defeated Santa Catalina 53-11, lost 43-39 to Palma and won by forfeit to Seaside.

In the home win over Santa Catalina, Lopez scored 12 points and Jocelyn Romero joined her in double figures with 11 points. Hearne and Paramo each had nine rebounds in the game.

Against Notre Dame, Carrillo led King City with 13 points and Romero added 10 points. Hearne led the team with 11 boards.

The Mustangs played Tuesday night at Pajaro Valley, where they won 56-23.

Next, King City (9-4 league, 10-13 overall) will host Greenfield (6-6 league, 6-11 overall) on Thursday for their final league game.
