KING CITY — Three straight league wins kept the King City Lady Mustang basketball team amongst the league leaders at 4-1 and in a second place tie with Soledad. King City won a home game 60-27 over the Gonzales Spartans, and beat the host Santa Catalina Cougars 57-14 on the road in Monterey.
“The girls are playing well,” said Lady Mustang head coach Frank Padilla. “We just need to keep playing good defense and keep making good decisions on offense. We know the next two weeks are big, starting on Tuesday (last night) with Greenfield.”
In the victory over Gonzales the Lady Mustangs took a 30-10 halftime lead and had solid games by many players. Megan Flores led the team in scoring and on the boards with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Flores played a complete game with three assists, six steals, and four blocked shots.
Alyssa Richardson just missed a double-double herself with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Contributing to the win were Mikayla Davis with nine points, three rebounds, and seven assists, and Delaney Carroll with nine points, nine rebounds, at three blocked shots.
On Friday at Santa Catalina King City had a strong performance as they took a 30-8 halftime lead, allowed just six points in the third quarter, and held the Cougars without a point in the final quarter.
Flores had another double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds and added a blocked shot. Carroll had her own double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Davis scored eight points with one 3-point basket, five rebounds, and four steals. Richardson had eight points, three rebounds, eight assists, and four steals. Buddy Camacho and Megan Jones had four points apiece.
King City (4-1, 7-7 overall) hosted Greenfield last night and will host the defending MTAL champion Stevenson Pirates tomorrow night.
