United Way Monterey County announces 2020 Emergency Food and Shelter Program grant recipients

City of Gonzales, Meals on Wheels and Sun Street Centers among grantees

MONTEREY COUNTY — Nearly $700,000 in Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) grants have been approved for distribution to 23 organizations in Monterey County.

The grants are federally funded and administered by United Way Monterey County (UWMC) and a local board made up of representatives from national agencies, homeless advocates and local nonprofit organizations.

The following organizations have received grants: Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County, Catholic Charities Diocese of Monterey, Central Coast Center for Independent Living (CCCIL), City of Gonzales, City of Salinas, City of Seaside, Community Human Services, Food Bank for Monterey County, Franciscan Workers of Junipero Serra, Gathering for Women, I-HELP, Love Our Central Coast, Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula, Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley, Mujeres en Accion /Women in Action, PVPSA Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance Inc., Rancho Cielo, Monterey County Society of St. Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army Monterey Peninsula Corps, Sun Street Centers, The Village Project Inc. and YWCA Monterey County.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for basic need services, especially food, housing and shelter and rental assistance, is rapidly increasing in Monterey County,” said Katy Castagna, president and CEO, UWMC. “The federal government more than doubled the funding this year to address the growing need generated by this crisis.”
