PACIFIC GROVE — The Soledad Lady Aztecs are 2-2 in the Mission Trail Athletic League after a 13-5 win over King City and a 1-0 loss to Pacific Grove. Soledad outscored the Lady Mustangs nine to one in the last five innings of play and struggled against the Breakers in Pacific Grove.

Soledad took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first at King City and the Lady Mustangs responded with a run in their half of the inning, to trail 2-1. After the Lady Aztecs scored a pair of runs in the top of the second, King City scored three to tie the game at 4-4.

Behind the hitting of Monique Rodriguez and Savannah Bermudez, Soledad scored runs in each of the remaining inning except for the fifth. King City ended the game with one last run in the bottom of the seventh for the 13-15 final.

Alize Duarte started the game at pitcher for Soledad and allowed four runs while striking out three. Elena Meza pitched the last five innings and gave up one unearned run and struck out four. Rodriguez hit a double and Bermudez was 2 x 3 with a triple and a single. Adriana Valdez had a strong offensive game with a 3 x 4 hitting performance.

In the JV contest, King City shut out Soledad 5-0. Allyna Quesada took the loss at pitcher for Soledad.

On Friday in Pacific Grove, the host Breakers scored the lone run of the game in the first inning. Soledad had a few opportunities to get back in the ball game but could not mount a comeback.

“We had a runner thrown out at third in one inning and had another inning end in a groundout with a runner on,” said Soledad head coach Joel Ramirez. “PG was able to score when we had blown coverage in the infield on one play and they got the run. I felt that our pitcher Elena Meza did a good job against the heart of the PG lineup. She gave up seven hits and just that one run.”

Monique Rodriguez had two hits and Evelyn Ramirez had two hits for Soledad. Pacific Grove defeated the Soledad JV team by a 15-3 score.

Yesterday the Aztec teams played host to the Santa Catalina Cougars and complete the week of Mission Trail Athletic League games in Pebble Beach tomorrow afternoon.
