SALINAS VALLEY — King City High Lady Mustangs recovered from a brutal 19-6 loss to the Soledad Aztecs with a 9-3 win at home against the Gonzales Spartans last Thursday afternoon.

In the loss to Soledad two days earlier, King City gave up 12 runs in the first inning.

“Victoria Hamilton had a great game defensively and offensively,” said Lady Mustangs head coach Julie Hood. “She went three for four with a home run and two RBIs (runs batted in). Breanna Owens went three for three with a single, double and a triple and Lisa Villanueva went two for three with three RBIs. Malaya Carrillo was our winning pitcher.”

Gonzales coach Jimmy Carrillo praised his players in the tough loss to King City.

“The Mustangs scored early and often, and our bat cooled off,” Carrillo said. “Celeste Camarena continued her strong offensive way going three for four. Stepping in for emergency relief, Alex Guerrero showed strong poise keeping the Spartans in the game with her pitching.”

The Spartans began the week with Monday’s 14-11 slugfest against the visiting Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates. Sofia Prieto picked up the win on the mound in the back-and-forth contest.

Leading the Spartans on offense was Bryanna Perez with a 4×4 performance with the bat. Celeste Camarena finished 3×5 at the plate against Stevenson.

The following day Gonzales shut out the Greenfield Bruins by a 13-0 score. Leah Salas and Bryanna Perez went 3×3 and Prieto struck out five and added a 2×3 hitting performance.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mustangs were in Pebble Beach and played the Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates. On Thursday, King City hosted the Carmel Padres.

Gonzales hosted Pacific Grove on Tuesday in the Spartans’ only game of the week.
