SALINAS VALLEY — South Monterey County high school girls’ and boys’ soccer teams have just a handful of Pacific Coast Athletic League games remaining to play in their respective divisions.
Teams will be playing for league titles and Central Coast Section playoff consideration.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The Soledad girls will be having a showdown Thursday night in Salinas against the host Salinas High Cowboys at the Pit.
Salinas is 7-0-1 in the Gabilan Division, with Soledad right behind at 6-0-1. A win over the Cowboys could mean a championship for the Aztecs, as the two teams finished in a 2-2 tie earlier in the season.
“We have been working and prepping really hard for this game and we know it won’t be an easy game,” said Soledad head coach Victor Garcia. “We are ready to compete the full 80 minutes of the game to come out with a victory.”
On Jan. 29, Soledad went to Hollister and came home with a 1-0 win over the Haybalers. Vanessa Aguilar scored the game winner 10 minutes into the second half for the Aztecs. Goalie Mariana Leon was credited with 14 saves.
Last Friday against the visiting Everett Alvarez, the Aztecs shut out the Eagles by a 5-0 score. Nichole Gonzalez led Soledad with two goals. Scoring single goals were Michelle Campos, Myah De Leon and Giselle Zepeda. Vanessa Aguilar, Michelle Aguilar, Campos and Zepeda had assists for the Aztecs.
Mariana Leon had six goalie saves and Audrey Gonzalez had three goalie saves.
The Greenfield girls (5-1-3) stayed on top of the Cypress Division, although they lost 3-2 at King City on Jan. 28 and finished in a 0-0 tie against Palma in Salinas two days later.
Kimberly Gomez, Isabella Swift-Hernandez and Destiny Mosqueda scored goals for host King City. The Greenfield contest was the only game of the week for the Mustangs (3-2-2, Cypress).
Gonzales (5-2-2) lost on Jan. 28 by a 3-2 score to host Pacific Grove and defeated visiting Seaside 5-0 last Thursday at Rabobank. In the loss to the Breakers, Janelle Garcia scored the two Spartan goals and Alessandra Tejeda-Ochoa assisted on both goals. Goalie Italia Hernandez made three saves.
In the win over Seaside in Salinas, Garcia scored four goals and Valerie Oliva scored a solo goal. Oliva had three assists while Jenny Fajardo and Tejeda-Ochoa each had an assist. Hernandez made five saves with help from defenders Grecia Valdez-Cisneros, Alitzel Mauro-Perez, Maria Rosales and Andrea Amador.
Scheduled games this week included: Feb. 3 — Greenfield at Seaside, Gonzales at Stevenson and King City varsity at Pacific Grove; Feb. 4 — Soledad at Watsonville; Feb. 5 — Greenfield at Santa Catalina and Gonzales at King City; Feb. 6 — Soledad at Salinas; and Feb. 7 — Greenfield at Pacific Grove, Gonzales hosts Palma and King City at Stevenson.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The Gonzales boys (7-1, Cypress) had a successful week with a 1-0 win at Rabobank on Jan. 28 against North Monterey County and a 3-0 win in Watsonville against Monte Vista Christian.
Jorge Uribe scored the winning goal for Gonzales against the NMC Condors on an assist by Jose Camacho. Goalie Luis Cabada was credited with seven saves.
In the game with Monte Vista Christian, Edgar Santiago scored two goals and Ulisses Mancillas scored a solo goal. Jore Uribe had two assists and Mancillas had one assist. Cabada had 10 saves in the shutout.
Soledad (4-2-2) recovered from the previous week’s loss to Gonzales with a 5-0 win over Ceiba and a 3-1 victory over the Carmel Padres. Alfredo Garcia scored four goals in the Ceiba win and Jason Rico contributed with a goal. Joshua Guzman, Christian Romero, Jesus Ortiz and Carlos Bautista assisted on goals.
In the win against the Padres, Alfredo Garcia, Joshua Guzman and Alexis Rua scored goals while Jason Rico and Jesus Ortiz assisted on goals.
Greenfield (2-4-2, Gabilan) lost 2-0 to visiting Hollister on Jan. 28 and were beaten 3-2 at home by Everett Alvarez on Jan. 30.
This week’s game schedule includes: Feb. 3 — Gonzales at Ceiba and Soledad at Pacific Collegiate; Feb. 4 — King City at Pajaro Valley; Feb. 5 — Gonzales hosts Carmel and Greenfield at North Salinas; Feb. 6 — King City at Stevenson; and Feb. 7 — Gonzales at Pacific Collegiate and Soledad at Monte Vista Christian.
