SALINAS VALLEY — With just one game left before the Christmas break, the Gonzales High varsity boys’ soccer team is 4-1-2 in pre-season play.

Last week the Spartans recovered from a 1-1 stalemate with Greenfield by running off three straight victories.

“Last Monday we beat King City by a 2-1 score with goals by Miguel Ibarra and Ulisses Mancillas,” said Gonzales head coach Miguel Vidauri. “Two days later, we beat Alisal with goals by Emmanuel Valdez and Omar Gonzalez.”

Last Friday, the Spartans defeated Rancho San Juan by a 2-1 score with goals by Omar Gonzalez and George Uribe, with an assist by Jose Camacho. Israel Saldana scored the lone goal for King City on a header in the Gonzales game.

The Spartans will complete the month of December with a game against the Palma Chieftains on Friday. Gonzales is currently ranked fourth in the tri-county area.

King City High boys’ soccer team defeated the North Monterey County Condors 3-1 in Castroville on Dec. 11 with goals by Deon Rodriguez and Emmanuel Cruz. On Dec. 13, the Mustangs finished in a 2-2 tie with North Salinas. Ernesto Aguirre and Aviel Gomez scored the King City goals.

King City (1-3) played at Soledad on Tuesday night and will host Everett Alvarez on Thursday night.

Soledad High girls’ soccer team improved to 6-1 in the pre-season after winning three games and losing one at last week’s Harold S. Young Tournament in Clovis.

Soledad began the tourney with two games last Friday, defeating Yosemite by a 4-0 score, followed by a 4-0 loss to Sanger. The Lady Aztecs recovered on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Pioneer Valley and beat Justin Garza 2-0 in the afternoon.

“Over the tournament, Mariana Leon collected 52 saves,” said Soledad head coach Victor Garcia. “Nichole Gonzalez scored two goals with one assist, Michelle Aguilar scored one goal and Vanessa Aguilar had two goals and four assists. Giselle Zepeda and Myrin Amilpa scored two goals apiece and Maria Sanchez and Michelle Campos scored single goals.”

Soledad will host Gonzales on Wednesday.

The Spartan girls have been playing in the Fremont Firebird Classic Tournament the past few weeks and had games with Prospect (6-1 loss), the Nueva School (6-1 loss), Half Moon Bay (7-0 loss) and Pinewood School (4-1 win). Next, they played at Everett Alvarez on Monday before their game against Soledad this week.
