KING CITY — Science teacher Jim Van Horn has brought his stuffed chinstrap penguin to Chalone Peaks Middle School in King City, where it was on display for students when they began the school year on Tuesday.

Van Horn teaches physical science and has opted to have the penguin on display in the life science classroom alongside other animal exhibits, such as a jackrabbit and a peregrine falcon.

The penguin itself was originally from Adm. Richard Byrd’s truck during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition, which included a series of journeys that spanned from the 1920s through 1940s.

Students at Chalone Peaks will be able to connect their lessons to the real world through a visual reminder of a creature from across the globe.
