SOLEDAD — Joselyn Quezada and Liliana Negrete entered a virtual science fair competition, the Healthy Habits Virtual Science Fair, this past summer and were chosen as runner-ups among the thousands of entries on Nov. 2. The fair was hosted by Legends of Learning Inc., and was a game-based learning competition series.


LATINO CAUCUS

CALIFORNIA — Latino Caucus of California Counties announced new leadership on Dec. 18 from throughout the state, including a new president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Monterey County District 3 Supervisor Chris Lopez was named the new treasurer. The Latino Caucus is an organization that encourages solutions to issues and concerns, promotes Latino leaders and works with the California State Association of Counties in the interest of Californians.


FIRST NIGHT

MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey will ring in the new year with an alteration to the usual First Night celebration. The new program will feature music, art and poetry from coast to coast. First Night events nationwide are collaborating online through a streamed celebration rather than an in-person event, in order to adhere to Covid-19 health guidelines.
