Grateful Dead hit to be focus of First Theater talk

MONTEREY — The story behind the Grateful Dead’s 1987 hit “Touch of Grey” and its connection to Monterey County will be explored during a free multimedia presentation on Aug. 26 at California’s First Theater in Monterey.

Music writer and historian John Brackett, author of the newly released book “Touch of Grey, or How the Grateful Dead Became Pop Stars,” will discuss how the San Francisco band’s unexpected hit helped propel it to a new level of mainstream fame after two decades as a countercultural music force.

The song’s accompanying music video featured live footage from a 1987 Grateful Dead concert at Laguna Seca Raceway and received major airplay on MTV, helping introduce the band to a new generation of fans.

The presentation begins at 6 p.m. at First Theater, located at the corner of Pacific and Scott streets. Brackett will discuss the creation of the song and the story of how it transformed the band’s legacy.

Following the presentation, Brackett will answer questions and sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase at First Theater.

The event is free, but reservations are encouraged. Reservations can be made online at MontereyStateHistoricPark.as.me/TouchofGrey.
