BIG SUR — Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park will reopen to the public Friday, Oct. 16, after a two-month closure during the Timber Fire, which burned approximately 517 acres within the park, including numerous trails.
The park became a base camp and incident command center shortly after the fire began Aug. 8, supporting Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies throughout the emergency response.
Thousands of firefighters and support personnel from across California and the country used the park as they worked to contain the fire and protect communities, infrastructure and natural resources in the Big Sur area. State Park Peace Officers, resource staff and maintenance crews also assisted with evacuations and efforts to protect infrastructure and natural resources.
With the park transitioning out of its emergency response role, California State Parks is preparing to welcome visitors back.

Beginning Oct. 16, visitors will be able to access day-use areas, the campground, Buzzards Roost Trail, River Path, Nature Trail, Redwood Grove Boardwalk, Nature Center and Campfire Center. Big Sur Lodge will also reopen.
Several trails will remain closed because of fire damage and ongoing safety concerns, including Pfeiffer Falls Trail, Valley View Trail, Oak Grove Trail, Mount Manuel Trail, Big Sur River Gorge Trail and Pine Ridge Trail.
Burned areas may contain hazards, such as unstable trees, falling rocks and debris, damaged trails, erosion and the potential for debris flows and flash flooding during rainstorms.
The closures will remain in effect while State Parks staff and partner agencies assess conditions and conduct recovery work. Visitors who enter closed trails or burned areas will be cited.
State Parks said staff will continue evaluating fire damage, addressing hazards and restoring public access as conditions allow. Visitors are encouraged to follow posted closures and remain alert to changing conditions.
