SALINAS VALLEY — Northridge Mall, an iconic shopping destination in Salinas, marks its 50th anniversary with a momentous celebration this Sunday.
To honor this significant milestone, the mall is hosting a free community event that offers a one-of-a-kind journey through the past five decades, an opportunity to celebrate the bright future of the Northridge Mall.
The Northridge Mall has undergone significant transformation over the decades — growing from a humble collection of shops in the early 1970s to the impressive retail destination it is today.
The mall’s footprint expanded in 1974 with the addition of a Sears anchor store, marking the unification of the entire complex under the “Northridge Mall” name. Major retailers like Mervyn’s and JCPenney became key tenants, solidifying the mall’s status as a premier shopping destination.
In the 1980s, Toys R’ Us (now Big Lots) and Century Theaters enhanced the mall’s appeal as a hub for shopping and entertainment. Macy’s further cemented its presence in the 1990s, while the 2000s brought additional changes, including the construction of a Best Buy store, a JCPenney expansion, and the addition of impressive dining options.
Throughout these changes, the mall has retained several long-standing tenants, such as Cinnabon, GNC, Park Avenue Suits, Footlocker, Bath and Body Works, Northridge Nails, Old Navy and the iconic Macy’s department store.
“Fifty years ago there was a unique idea to develop a first-class enclosed shopping center serving the Central Coast, resulting in the development of Northridge Mall,” said General Manager Bryan Lamb. “Over the years, the center has expanded its footprint dramatically, offering new retail categories, such as entertainment, electronics and personal services. More recently, new ownership and property management are shaping the future of Northridge Mall by elevating the customer experience, strengthening community partnerships, improving property aesthetics, and diversifying the center’s retailer mix.”
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the mall invites the community to join in on a celebration that will transport guests on a nostalgic journey through the decades.
On Sunday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., experience a festive atmosphere highlighting the best of fashion, music and entertainment from the 1970s to the 2000s. Guests can enjoy free activities, including dance performances from renowned entertainers like the Circus Caballero troupe, mini-makeovers, caricature artists, face painting and more.
At the heart of the celebration, the Northridge Mall team will take the stage at 12 p.m. to express heartfelt gratitude to the loyal community, followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting alongside the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce. This once-in-a-lifetime celebration promises to be an unforgettable experience, transporting all who attend on a nostalgic and joyful trip down memory lane.
