KING CITY — “The Kitchen” is officially open. Beginning today, June 7, the new open air market will run every Wednesday through October from 3 to 7 p.m. at 815 Broadway St., across from King City High School, in the JV Automobiles parking lot.
Organizer Tina Lopez said 21 vendors will be on site to offer a variety of fresh food and produce, art, plants and other items in addition to music and live entertainment. The Kitchen fills the void left by the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture’s Farmer’s Market, which was discontinued this year due to a shortage of funds and volunteers.
“A lot of people were sad to see the Farmer’s Market end, but it was difficult for the chamber since it was run on a volunteer basis,” Lopez said.
The Kitchen, however, will cook up all the favorites from the past Farmer’s Markets, including baked potatoes, corn on the cob, tacos, barbecue chicken and tri-tip, to name a few. Seating will be available for those who would like to eat their meals at the market.
“We’re also going to have live performances and ongoing amplified music,” Lopez said. “We’re inviting community groups or members who want a place to perform to come and sign up.”

As for the market’s name, Lopez explains, “Everything happens in the kitchen, right? At home, everybody is always in the kitchen.”
Lopez said her goal is to provide a place for the community to come together and have a good time, and if the market succeeds, there is a possibility of turning it into a year-round event.
“We’re trying to make it colorful and fun, with good food and music,” she said. “We just hope we can get a good crowd every week.”
