KING CITY — Monterey County Elections Department has assigned the letter “T” to the measure on the November ballot requesting a half-cent increase in the King City sales tax.

Registered voters will have a chance to say whether they approve of increasing the current rate from 8.75% to 9.25%.

Currently, King City and Gonzales have the lowest sales tax in Monterey County, with most other cities at the 9.25% rate. The City of Gonzales has a measure on its November ballot requesting a half-cent increase.

King City staff estimates the increase will bring in approximately $1.2 million per year for 12 years.

The information listed on the Monterey County Elections website indicates that money raised would go to the City’s General Fund and be available for such expenses as improving public safety, fixing roads and upgrading parks and recreation. These are all important goals in the Unfunded Priority Needs Plan adopted by the City Council earlier this year.

City Councilmembers Mike LeBarre, Carlos Victoria, Carlos DeLeon, Robert Cullen and Oscar Avalos voted unanimously to put the measure to the voters as a means of helping continue the improvements seen in the city in the past nine years.

A majority vote is needed to pass the measure, which would take effect April 1, 2025.
