Goodwill’s goal has always been to strengthen communities by eliminating barriers to opportunity and employment — and education has long been the foundation of those efforts.

That’s why Goodwill Central Coast does everything it can to support local schools and the amazing teachers who lead the way.

Each year GCC gives away hundreds of well-stocked backpacks to deserving local students to help them get a headstart on the upcoming school year. It all fits within its mission to build lives, families and communities through employment opportunities.

Having the proper school supplies is very impactful for young students in particular. Learning fundamentals begin with backpacks, binders, pens, paper and notebooks. Most early education is based on hands-on instructions, and without the necessary tools, the experience won’t be as positive.

Young students need their backpacks and tools to succeed. When they don’t have what they need, they can’t learn. Studies show that when kids have the necessities, they are twice as likely to succeed at whatever they decide to do with their lives.

GCC plans to give away 300 new backpacks (100 each in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties and 100 in San Luis Obispo County) filled with school supplies — including pencils, erasers, rulers, notebooks, a shirt and much more.

Goodwill invites community members in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties to register online at ccgoodwill.org from mid-July to mid-August to become eligible to win. KDON (102.5 FM) and KPRC (100.7 FM) will hold a three-week promotion from July 15 to Aug. 10, rewarding one deserving elementary school with 100 filled backpacks from Goodwill.

KDON and KPRC will reach out to its listeners for two weeks, asking them to nominate a school in Monterey County that deserves and needs the backpacks. The Top 10 schools will be featured on the stations’ websites and listeners will be asked to vote for the most deserving one.

San Luis Obispo radio station Wild 106.1 will hold an on-air promotion from July 17-31, rewarding one deserving elementary school with 100 filled backpacks. Wild 106.1 will reach out to its listeners from Aug. 7-14, asking them to nominate a school in SLO that deserves and needs the backpacks. The Top 10 schools will be featured on the station’s website and listeners will be asked to vote for the most deserving one.

The winning school will be announced on air on Aug. 15, and Goodwill will present the backpacks on the front steps of the winning school on Aug. 19. To nominate a school for this promotion, go to wild1061.com.

As a community nonprofit that helps build lives, families and communities by removing barriers to employment through its education, training and employment services, Goodwill Central Coast has long supported its local teachers. If we can help them save both time and money, it’s a win for local education and the future of children.
