KING CITY — The Gilroy High Mustangs baseball team took a commanding first inning lead to hand the King City Mustangs an 8-0 defeat in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division II Playoffs. King City ended the season with an overall record of 19-8.
“We actually played well after they jumped out to take a 5-0 lead,” said King City head coach Lorenzo Espino. “We never hung our heads down and we battled all seven innings. After our starter Brian Lopez came out, Esteban Siordia came in and pitched two innings, then Clay Barbree came in and finished the last three innings. Barbree hit a double our only hit.”
Gilroy, the second place team from the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division lost 11-2 to Christopher High despite defeating the Cougars twice during the regular season.
“We put the ball in play but right at them,” said Espino. “Nothing you can do and they had a really good pitcher that kept us off balance. Overall it was a great year as we made the playoffs and too second place in our league. I am going to miss this team especially the seniors. Some of them have been with me since they were freshman and to see them grow a pleasure.”
