JOLON — Fort Hunter Liggett marked its 85th anniversary May 2 with a public open house at Schoonover Airfield, drawing families from across the region for an afternoon and evening of displays, entertainment and community activities.

The free event, held from 3 to 9:30 p.m., featured military and civilian vendors, food booths, historical exhibits, World War II re-enactments, vehicle displays and interactive activities for all ages. Attendees browsed information tables from community partners and viewed a range of military equipment showcased by Army and Navy units, along with displays from multiple military museums.

Live music and dancing filled the air throughout the day, with performances by DJ Dook, the Army Reserve Band and country music duo Two Story Roads.

Children’s games and family-friendly activities were also offered as crowds moved between exhibits, displays and entertainment areas. A fireworks display capped the evening’s festivities.

“We were thrilled to open our gates to the community and celebrate this significant milestone,” said Fort Hunter Liggett Commander Jason McKenzie. He added that the open house was a “fantastic opportunity for the public to learn more about how we support Warrior Readiness and to enjoy a day of fun, entertainment and community spirit.”

Fort Hunter Liggett’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation team also reflected on the event’s success, saying, “What a night. Thank you to everyone who came out and made it so special. Huge shoutout to Two Story Road, DJ Dook and The Army Reserve Band for bringing the energy all night long. And as always, a big thank you to our sponsors and incredible staff behind the scenes who made it all happen. We couldn’t do it without you.”

The milestone event, part of a celebration series held every five years at the installation, highlighted Fort Hunter Liggett’s long-standing role as a key training site for the U.S. Army and other military branches. The installation is the largest Army Reserve installation and the seventh largest Army installation in the country.
