SALINAS VALLEY — Cross county runners from South Monterey County high schools opened the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL) season this week with meets on the Palo Corona Course in Carmel Valley.
Gonzales High competed in the Cypress Division at Palo Corona on Wednesday, while King City High ran in the Gabilan Division on Thursday, along with Greenfield and Soledad from the Mission Division of the PCAL. The results of the meets were not available at press time.
During the Jackie Henderson Memorial XC Invitational that took place Sept. 9 at North Monterey County High School in Castroville, King City placed eighth in the varsity boys division, while Soledad placed 17th and Gonzales placed 20th. The Lady Mustangs placed fifth in the varsity girls division.
The King City JV boys placed third, Greenfield placed seventh and Soledad placed ninth. In the JV girls race, Soledad placed fifth and King City placed seventh.
King City won the frosh-soph boys division and Greenfield placed third.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, all four South Monterey County teams will compete in the 23rd Annual Monterey Bay Invitational at Toro Park in Salinas.
Races will take place in the varsity boys and girls, JV boys and girls and frosh-soph boys and girls divisions, along with a 2.1-mile race for boys and girls for runners that need a little more running experience.
