SOUTH COUNTY — King City High boys cross country team placed fourth in the Division IV championship race at the California Interscholastic Federation State Meet on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

King City had their top five runners within 27 seconds of each other. Esteban Deniz, a junior, placed 24th overall to lead the Mustang runners, finishing the 3.1 mile course in 16:18.

“There were just a lot of good teams at State this year,” said King City head coach Paul Cavanaugh. “Our boys kept their composure and stuck to the plan of staying together on the course and finish as a team. Their times were really good and they should be proud of how they finished. The teams from CCS (Central Coast Section), did well as Scotts Valley was seventh and Pacific Grove finished in 13th place.”

Running right behind Deniz for the CCS champion Mustangs were: Mario Avila, 37th place (16:31); Fausto Medina, 40th place (16:33); Daniel Correa, 53rd place (16:39); Ricardo Diaz, 60 place (16:45); Oscar Delgado, 116th place (17:24); and Peter Avila, 120th place (17:25).

“We have a pretty young team,” said Coach Cavanaugh. “Medina and Correa are seniors, Deniz, Diaz, and Avila are juniors, and Avila and Delgado are sophomores.”

The top four teams in Division IV were: 1. Laguna Beach, 2. Sir Francis Drake, 3. Placer and 4. King City.

The CCS Division III Greenfield High boys team placed 18th place and were led by Rigo Garcia’s 29th place finish (16:10) and Mauricio Arias’ 48th place finish in 16:28. Also running for the Bruins team were: Isaias Solorio, 138th place (17:22); Daniel Pantoja, 147th place (17:26); Luis Martinez, 170th place (17:51); Kleverson Pena, 186th place (18:08); and Jose Luis DeJesus, 188th place (18:12).

The top four teams in Division III were: 1. Ridgeview, 2. Campolindo, 3. West Torrance and 4. Indio.
