KING CITY — The King City Lady Mustangs had two girls players score in double-figures and played solid defense to defeat the defending league champion Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates 51-47 last Tuesday in the Mustang gym.
The victory put the King City in a three-way tie for first in the Mission Trail Athletic League with the Pirates and Soledad Aztecs at 6-1.
“Holding Gaskins (Ambreece), to 18 was huge,” said King City head coach Frank Padilla. “We rotated Mikayla Davis, Lucy Cabrera, and Nancy Andrade to guard her. The girls were able to make it tough to get the ball in her hands. Megan’s 20 points and 23 rebounds were big too.”
Ambreece Gaskins entered the game leading the tri-county area with a 27-point per game average but the Mustangs held her to under 20 points. Megan Flores and Delaney Carroll are also in the top five in the tri-county area scoring at 11.56 (Flores) and 11.0 points per game. Flores was a force on the boards and leads the tri-county area with 225 rebounds. Carroll had banged the boards for 125 rebounds. Carroll had nine points, 14 rebounds, and one block shot while Flores added three assists, two steals, and one blocked shot to her stat sheet.
King City took a two-point lead after the first quarter at 13-11 but stretched the lead to 26 to 17 at halftime. The Pirates fought back and took a 34-33 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Mustangs scored 18 points in the final quarter to 13 for Stevenson to claim the four point lead.
Alyssa Richardson joined Flores and Carroll in double figures in scoring with 11 points and added one 3-point basket, eight rebounds, and five assists. Davis chipped in with four points, two rebounds, and three steals, and Nancy Andrade scored three points with three assists.
Last Tuesday night in Greenfield the Lady Mustangs beat the Lady Bruins by a 52-42 score. Four players scored in double-figures for King City in the win. Flores had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, with four assists and two blocked shots. Carroll just missed a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds and came up with six steals. Richardson led King City in scoring with 13 points and one 3-point basket and Lucy Cabrera added two points and had five steals.
In the JV contest the King City Broncos defeated Stevenson 58-18. High scorers for King City in the RLS game were Sarah Brewen with 14 points, Johana Valdez with 10 points, and Alex Head with nine points.
The Lady Bruins completed the week with a 35-29 home game to the Carmel Padres. Maria Hernandez led the Bruins in scoring with 10 points. Greenfield hosted Soledad on Monday, play at Pacific Grove tonight on the Peninsula, and will host the Gonzales Spartans tomorrow night.
King City will out to keep pace with the other two league leaders as they hosted Carmel, have a showdown with Soledad, and complete the week with a home game with Pacific Grove. The Lady Mustangs defeated Pacific Grove on the road 41-31 in the first round of league play and lost to Soledad at home, 59-42.
The Lady Broncos beat Greenfield 51-35 and were led in scoring by Micaela Ibarra with 16 points, Kayla Silva with 11 points, and Breana Owens and Johana Valdez each had eight points respectively.
“I am very proud of my team and the progress they have all made,” said Bronco head coach Daniel Morales. “Every day they come to practice ready to work and to become better basketball players. We keep on improving every day!”
Games for the Lady Mustangs and Lady Broncos were on Monday at home with the Carmel Padres, tonight in Soledad, and on Friday with Pacific Grove in King City.
