KING CITY — Wins over the Oakwood Hawks of Morgan Hill and the Trinity Christian Warriors of Monterey has the King City Mustang boys basketball at 2-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League.
King City had not won two games in a row since starting the non-league schedule with wins over Gonzales and Coast Union.
“We had to fight hard but were able to win both games this week,” said King City head coach Jesus Ramirez. “The game with Oakwood was close the whole game and in the Trinity game we didn’t take control of the game until the fourth quarter when we outscored them 28-12. We led 36-32 in the first half in the Oakwood game and then opened up the lead to six points at 50-44. We maintained the led and then Oakwood went on an eight point run took the lead in the last minute. We exchanged possessions and our last one we had a miss under the basket but Isidro Cabrera was able to put the ball in for the game winner at 58-56.”
Angel Trujillo led King City with 14 points and had four 3-point baskets. Andy Barrios added 12 points and Cedric Perez finished with 10 points and had two 3-point baskets. Hirem Parmer contributed with eight points.
The King City Broncos won the JV game 57-40 over Oakwood. Caleb Hood scored 12 points and Alalberto Madrid matched Hood with 12 points.
“Building two-way players is my goal,” said Bronco head coach Henry Ventura. “I want every one of my guys to have that mental discipline every time they step foot on the court.”
In the Trinity Christian game the Mustangs trailed for a good chunk of time in the first half and went into intermission behind, 25-23. In the third quarter King City trialed by four before making the 28-12 run to secure the win at 62-50.
Andres Arellano led the Mustangs in scoring with 17 points and had one 3-point basket. Trujillo had 12 points with two 3-point baskets and Barrios had 12 points of his own.
The Broncos won their game over Trinity Christian, 74-23. Hood led the way with 15 points and Ashton Headley had 11 points to help the Broncos improve to 4-1.
“My guys are constantly working,” said Coach Ventura. “They leave it all on the court whether it is practice or game day.”
The King City Ponies played just one game last week, defeating the Anzar JV team by a 42-32 score. King City has a 16-2 record in the frosh division.
“We jumped out to a 19-0 lead after the first five minutes, and a 27-7 halftime lead,” said King City Pony coach Ken Kline. “All 10 players on the team scored. It was a non-league game because Trinity does not have a frosh team.”
Scoring for the Ponies were: Joe White, eight points; Rafa Valdez, five points with one 3-point basket; Adam Cortez, two points; Mario Torres, five points with one 3-point basket; Mike Colonel, three points, and one 3-point basket; Brian Hernandez, four points; Jonah Mendez, two points; Trey Salcido, four points; Levi Hood, five points; Devin Morales, four points.
The Mustangs and Broncos played at Greenfield yesterday and travel to Stevenson School in Pebble Beach tomorrow.
