After a fun summer, it’s Back to School and Monterey County Free Libraries is ready to support students academically and with leisure activities.
1. Learn: To assist students with schoolwork, MCFL subscribes to Brainfuse HelpNow, an online service offering academic support in most subjects. HelpNow offers students assistance through Live Tutoring, the Writing Lab, SkillSurfer to build skills, and a Language Lab for new language learners. Logon to HelpNow through our webpage with your MCFL library card number for free access. This year we also have access to Tutor.com, funded by the California State Library.
2. Visit: MCFL’s Student Support Centers offer students computers to do their homework, access to print and online books for research and academic work. Additionally, Student Support Centers offer afterschool activities such as crafts, build and play or gaming for relaxation and fun after a long day of thinking and learning.
3. Explore: Still looking for adventures? Make sure to check out the Outdoor Adventure Kits. MCFL has so many for you to try, from bird watching kits to yoga kits to metal detector kits, so you can search for gold at the beach! Visit your library to check out a kit. We also have California State Park passes, check one out and spend a day at Point Lobos.
4. Read: Book Lover’s Day is celebrated Aug. 9, and we invite you to expand your horizons and read a book translated into English to learn about the world from a different perspective. Or just spend your afternoon reading a book, lying on the couch or with an audiobook hiking in the woods.
5. Appreciate: August is American Artist Appreciation Month, which means it’s a great time to learn about the different types of art that make our country great and unique. From the poetry of Walt Whitman and Mary Oliver to the visual art of Andy Warhol and Georgia O’Keefe, we’ve got a book for that! If making art is more your thing, visit our Facebook and Instagram pages every Saturday to get inspired by an art or craft project from our YouTube Channel collection.
Your Library is here for you all year round, to help you pursue happiness or reach your academic potential. Visit us for some inspiration.
