This year, the Monterey County Needs Assessment Collaborative, a partnership of Monterey County hospitals, health organizations and community agencies, completed a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to determine the healthcare needs of residents.
The 2025 findings identify diabetes as a persistent health issue in Monterey County, underscoring the need for ongoing public education to help our community understand, prevent and manage this condition.
Diabetes is a condition that affects how the body regulates blood sugar levels. Left unmanaged, it can lead to serious complications, such as heart disease, kidney failure and vision loss.
Type 2 diabetes doesn’t appear overnight. It develops slowly, often over the course of years, as small habits lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. The good news is that small positive changes in your daily routine can make a significant difference in combating diabetes and other health issues.
Eating a nutritious diet is one of the best things you can do for your health. You don’t have to give up everything you love. Focus on including more whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, while reducing your intake of sugar, sweetened beverages and processed snacks. Reaching for a glass of water instead of a soda is a simple choice that can make a big impact.
Try to aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week: a brisk walk, a trip to the gym, a bike ride or time gardening at home all count. Consistency matters more than intensity.
It is also important to prioritize rest and manage stress. Chronic stress and lack of sleep can raise blood sugar levels and increase appetite. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep whenever possible and adopt a few stress-relieving habits that work for you, such as relaxation or breathing exercises, spending time in nature, meditation, or journaling.
Don’t miss your regular check-up with your doctor. Catching issues early can prevent diabetes entirely.
