SALINAS VALLEY — As wrestling season comes to an end, many Salinas Valley wrestlers are trying to punch their tickets to the Central Coast Section (CCS) wrestling championships.

Soledad Aztecs, which wrestles in the Mission Division, won the team title last week. Going to CCS for Soledad are Elijah Melchor (140 pounds), Eric DeSantos (184 pounds), Chris Rubacalva (197 pounds) and Donn Greer (222 pounds), who all won their respective weight classes.

This past week the Greenfield Bruins competed at the Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division finals, hosted by King City High School, and captured the team title.

Winning their weight classes for the Bruins were Diego Zapien, Tomas Vargas, Aaron Garcia, Marco Silva and Jonathan Anaya.

Gonzales Spartans also competed at the PCAL Cypress Division finals and will be sending three wrestlers to the CCS tournament.

Dominique Montiel (220 pounds), Jose Viorato (145 pounds) and Andrew Zarate (285 pounds) all placed second in the finals and qualified for the CCS tournament.

All five varsity girls who competed for Gonzales High have qualified for CCS: Vanessa Romero (101 pounds), second place; Gracie Leon (116 pounds), fourth place; Cherish Yebra (108 pounds), fifth place; Kimberly Ortega (121 pounds); and Jozelyn Reyes (189 pounds). (Contributed)

PCAL’s girls wrestling championship took place Feb. 5 at Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas to determine the players who would be moving on to the CCS championship.
