Mustangs beat MVC in three

KING CITY — King City Lady Mustangs played well at home Oct. 2, defeating the visiting Monte Vista Christian Mustangs in three games, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22.

Grace Shepherd had 18 kills, 13 digs, with one ace and two blocks for King City.

Nancy Andrade added six kills, 15 digs, two assists and served seven aces. Ivy Hearne finished with six kills, eight digs and 13 assists, and Alexia Head had 12 digs with one ace. Jasmine Guillen and Vanessa Wheeler combined for four kills, and Kayla Silva had 18 assists and two aces.

Last Thursday the Lady Mustangs started the second half of Gabilan Divisional play and were swept in three games to the host Carmel Padres (6-25, 10-25 and 20-25). Shepherd led King City with 16 kills and had six digs. Elena Vazquez and Jalen Mendez combined for seven digs while Nancy Andrade added 12 digs.

In the JV contests last week, the King City Lady Broncos lost their games with Monte Vista Christian and Carmel.

“We lost to both teams, but they were very close matches,” said Lady Bronco head coach Sarah Shepherd. “Liz Hernandez led the team with 19 digs, followed by Jennifer Lugo with nine. We are proud of their improvement and look forward for the next couple of weeks.”

King City was home yesterday to Notre Dame (4-4) and will play league-leading Salinas (8-0) tomorrow in Salinas.

  

Greenfield loses two

GREENFIELD — Greenfield High volleyball team played two games last week in the Pacific Coast Athletic League. The Lady Bruins lost to the York School Falcons and to Oakwood.

York defeated Greenfield in four games, 25-11, 25-14, 11-25 and 25-11, and Oakwood beat the Lady Bruins in three games. Yesterday Greenfield hosted the Marina Mariners, and will host the Trinity Christian Warriors tomorrow in the Bruins gym.

  

Soledad places 2nd in league

SOLEDAD — A switch to the Cypress Division of the Pacific Coast Athletic League has been positive so far for the Soledad Lady Aztecs volleyball team. With a 7-1 divisional record and 10-7 overall mark, Soledad is staying in league in non-league play.

Last week the Aztecs beat North Monterey County Condors 25-10, 25-14 and 25-14 at home, then traveled to Gonzales and defeated the host Spartans, 25-11, 25-19 and 25-14.

“Krystal Villegas is constantly moving out on the court and not letting any balls drop,” said Soledad head coach Alicia Dominguez. “Jamileth Magdaleno and Olivia Fale had many kills against Gonzales and Jasmine Aguilera had many digs as a middle blocker.”

Yesterday Soledad traveled to Gilroy to play the Gilroy Mustangs, who are the leading the Lady Aztecs in divisional play. Tomorrow Soledad will host the Anzar Hawks.

  

Spartans lose to Aztecs

GONZALES — A young Gonzales High varsity volleyball team lost in three games to the visiting Soledad Aztecs last Thursday night in the Roger Fernando Gym.

Soledad defeated the Spartans 25-11, 25-19 and 25-15.  The loss dropped Gonzales to 1-5 in league and 1-15 overall.

“We’ve seen good progress in our six underclassmen,” said Gonzales head coach Desiree Baltazar. “We currently have three freshmen and three sophomores on our roster. It’s been tough for us during this rebuild, but it takes struggles to bring out the fighting spirit in athletes. As long as we stay together and keep pushing to improve we will get thought it.”

Gonzales hosted the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies yesterday and will travel to Castroville tomorrow to battle the North Monterey County Condors.
