KING CITY — A busy week of volleyball ended for the King City Lady Mustangs with a four-game win over the Santa Catalina in Monterey.

King City beat the host Cougars 25-23, 16-25, 25-14 and 25-20. Grace Shepherd recorder her highest kills in a match with 32 and added 18 digs, five ace serves and one block.

“We served a lot tougher in this match and were able to set up the ball more on our offensive side,” said King City head coach Christine Luna. “We were then able to get better swings. I hope this win turns into confidence for the girls and they continue to compete.”

Nancy Andrade had her highest kills total of the season with 12 and added 24 digs, two aces, and one block. Jasmine Guillen added two kills and Ivy Hearne and Kayla Silva combined for 46 assists and seven digs. Ivy Hearne also added two aces and a kill.

Last Tuesday King City began league play with a home game against the Carmel Padres. Carmel won the match 27-25, 25-22 and 25-20.

Shepherd had 26 kills, 14 digs, and three aces. Andrade finished with six kills, 13 digs, and four aces.

Elena Vasquez had two digs and had a strong game at the serving line.

Also contributing were: Alexia Head (six digs); Silva (19 assists and three aces); and Hearne (13 assists). Iylea Carpenter came up with a block and had a lot of touches.

In the second league game of the season, King City fell 25-17, 24-26, 25-16 and 25-19 to the Notre Dame Spirits in Salinas.

Shepherd had another big game with 20 kills and 16 digs. Andrade had six kills and 17 digs. Vanessa Wheeler and Silva had two kills. Vasquez added eight digs, Head had six digs and Jalen Mendez added one block.

The Lady Broncos lost in two games to Carmel, lost to Notre Dame in three games, and then came back with a win over Santa Catalina on Saturday.

“Though we were hoping for a better week, we saw a lot of good things,” said Lady Bronco head coach Sarah Shepherd. “Liz Hernandez led the team in digs in three matches, averaging about eight a night. Jannelle Armenta had a great serving game against Santa Catalina to help us take the lead. Kaylee Burpo was our standout in the front row and had great touches on defense and good swings as well. We hope to see more of it in the weeks to come.”

League continues for King City as they hosted the Salinas High Cowboys last night.
