KING CITY — For the past two weeks, the King City Lady Mustangs have been on the road for Gabilan Division contests, and in those four matches they have gone 2-2.
On Oct. 15, King City defeated host Hollister by a 3-1 score. Hollyn Hearne had 14 kills and 14 digs, and Iran Ibarra had seven kills, eight digs and two service aces. Xienna Novoa had 25 digs and two aces, while Janesa Lopez and Stephanie Velasquez combined for 28 assists and 13 digs.
“We came out strong in the first set, serving very tough,” said Mustangs head coach Christine Luna. “We took a down turn in the second set and turned it around in the third and fourth sets.”
On Oct. 17, the Lady Mustangs lost 3-1 to Stevenson, and then came back on Oct. 22 with a 3-0 win at Pacific Grove.
“The Stevenson loss was a tough loss for us,” Luna said. “We had the lead but could not seem to finish the match. Against PG, we usually have a tough time over there, but this year was a good match for us.”
Against Pacific Grove, Avery Munoz and Amity Hearne combined for 13 kills. Hollyn Hearne and Iran Ibarra combined for nine kills, 26 digs and four aces. Xienna Novoa added 24 digs, while Janesa Lopez and Stephanie Velasquez combined for 24 assists and 17 digs.
In the 3-0 loss to Salinas last Thursday, the Lady Mustangs put up a good fight on the Cowboy’s Senior Night.
“The girls played well,” Luna said. “It was an exciting and emotional night for all involved. Going into our last two matches, we are in a three-way tie, so everyone’s last two matches are important.”
Hollyn Hearne had 10 kills and one block, Ibarra had six aces and three kills, and Munoz added three kills and two blocks. Novoa had 18 digs and two aces, while Velasquez and Lopez combined for 23 assists.
King City hosted their Senior Night against Santa Catalina School on Monday and will finish the regular season on the road at first-place Carmel on Wednesday.
