KING CITY — A local teenager was arrested early Thursday morning for assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a shooting the night before, police said.

According to the King City Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting around 5:25 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Oxford Way. Upon arrival, the victim — who was not identified by police — said he was walking with a friend and his friend’s 6-year-old sister when a silver Pontiac pulled up and asked if he “banged.”

Police said the victim told his friend and the sister to hurry up, and they all ran. That is when, according to the victim, an occupant of the vehicle produced a handgun and fired four times at him, missing but striking a residence. The vehicle then fled.

Witnesses in the area helped police identify the vehicle in question and at least one of the occupants. Officers located the vehicle just after midnight on April 27 with the sole identified suspect, Jorge Cortes, 18, of King City.

Cortes, a validated Sureno gang member, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon without incident and taken to Monterey County Jail.
