SALINAS VALLEY — The Greenfield and King City high school softball teams have winning records in their respective divisions of the Pacific Coast Athletic League. The Bruins are 3-0 in the Cypress Division and the Mustangs are 4-1 in the Mission Division.

Greenfield played at home against Gonzales and downed the Spartans by a 16-13 score.

Yara Hernandez led the Bruins with four hits, including two doubles as the Bruins had a total of 18 hits. Aniah Helm added three hits for Greenfield and Isabella Figueroa added two doubles of her own.

Chloe Figueroa earned the pitching victory for Greenfield and helped her own cause with two base hits. The Bruins are coached by 2020 graduate Norma Ornelas, who is in her first year as a varsity coach.

Gonzales was led by Angelina Navarro, who hit two homeruns in the contest, and Priscilla Fierro, who added a homerun.

“It was a late start and the game was called after five innings,” said Gonzales head coach Jimmy Carrillo. “We held the lead in the early innings, then Greenfield came up with seven runs. We chipped away at the lead, but we ran out of time.”

The Bruins continue play in the Cypress Division on Wednesday at Santa Catalina in Monterey, will host St. Francis on Friday and complete the week with games at the Watsonville Tournament this Saturday.

The Spartans hosted North Monterey County on Monday, have another home game with Pajaro Valley on Wednesday and play at Marina High School on Friday.

The King City Mustangs won two Mission Division games last week — 8-4 at Soledad on April 1 and 8-4 at home against Rancho San Juan on April 3 — in addition to winning a non-league game against host Santa Cruz by an 8-1 score on Saturday.

At Soledad, Alizah Carrillo threw a six hitter in the win against the host Aztecs. Carrillo had three hits of her own, including a triple. Avery Munoz added a triple for King City and Janesa Lopez had a double.

At home with Rancho San Juan, King City had 10 hits in the win. Carrillo was the winning pitcher and Munoz hammered a double and a triple. Crystal Paramo had two triples in the contest.

King City traveled to Alisal on Tuesday and will host Pacific Grove on Thursday.
