SAN LUCAS — San Lucas Union Elementary School District will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, April 22, at 1:30 p.m. to celebrate the unveiling of its newly completed student athletic facilities, including a track, soccer field and sand volleyball court.
The event will take place at San Lucas Elementary School, 53675 San Benito St. in San Lucas, about 10 miles south of King City. Community members are invited to attend and take part in the celebration.
The project marks a milestone in the district’s ongoing efforts to expand student opportunities. Funded by the passage of Measure S in 2023, the new facilities are designed to give students increased access to physical activity, teamwork and wellness in a safe and engaging environment.
The improvements build on a series of campus upgrades in recent years, including modernization projects and energy efficiency work. The school serves students in grades TK-8 and focuses on academic achievement and social-emotional development.
“Investments like these make a meaningful difference for students, especially in our rural communities,” said Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Deneen Guss. “The new track and athletic facilities at San Lucas Elementary School will not only support student health and wellness, but also create new opportunities for connection, confidence-building and school pride. This is a wonderful example of a community coming together to support its students.”
San Lucas Union Elementary School District Superintendent Catherine Reimer said the project reflects the district’s commitment to student opportunity.
“This project represents so much more than new facilities, it reflects our deep commitment to providing our students with the opportunities they deserve,” Reimer said. “In a small, close-knit community like San Lucas, our school is at the heart of everything we do. These new spaces will allow our students to stay active, build teamwork skills and create lasting memories for years to come. We are incredibly grateful to our community for their continued support.”
Located in a tight-knit agricultural community of about 400 residents, San Lucas Elementary School plays a central role in the town’s identity. District officials said the ribbon-cutting will celebrate both the new facilities and the continued growth of the community it serves.
