GRAND OPENING

SOLEDAD — A grand-opening celebration of Hartnell College’s new Soledad Education Center is planned for Saturday, Oct. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature an official ribbon-cutting, building tours, family festival and free hot dog-hamburger picnic. The public is invited to walk through the 16,750-square-foot building at 1505 Metz Road, watch science demonstrations and talk to college staff about course offerings and how to become a Hartnell student.


ANIMAL GRANT

SALINAS — Monterey County Animal Services has received a $6,292 grant for animal control officer supplies from the California Animal Welfare Funders Collaborative. The group focused on organizations in California that demonstrated a desire to preserve the human-animal bond through either launching or improving upon services or programs to help keep pets and people together or improving lifesaving outcomes for dogs and cats in the state’s animal shelters. A total of $300,000 in grants was awarded this year to 27 organizations, including Monterey County Animal Services.


FIRE REFUNDS

MONTEREY COUNTY — California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has announced the approval of $154,915 in reimbursements to help Monterey County cover the costs of janitorial and security services used in conjunction with operating its Local Assistance Center following last year’s River Fire. The reimbursements represent the state’s 75% share of the county’s $206,553 in costs related to operating the LAC that are eligible under the California Disaster Assistance Act, following Gov. Gavin Newsom’s State of Emergency Proclamation on Aug. 19, 2020. During its operation from Aug. 30 to Sept. 12, 2020, the LAC served 259 households.
