SALINAS — Gil Basketball Academy will present its Court Heroes 12th Anniversary Awards Banquet on Saturday, March 19, in Salinas. The Court Heroes Award is given to someone in the community who is heroic, exceptional, respectful and outstanding. The gala event, from 5:30 to 11 p.m., includes a live band and DJ, no-host bar, dinner, dancing and silent auction at Salinas PAL Center, 100 Howard St., in Salinas. KING CITY — Pine Canyon Fire Department is hosting its 28th annual Tri-Tip Steak BBQ on Sunday, March 20. The meal includes tri-tip steak, beans, salad and roll for either takeout or sit-down from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pine Canyon Fire Station, 51251 Pine Canyon Road, in King City. Tickets will be available at the door, or can be purchased in advance from any Pine Canyon Fire member. King City High School’s Mustang Swim Team will also have a bake sale fundraiser at the barbecue.

KING CITY — Mee Memorial Healthcare System is observing American Diabetes Association Alert Day on Monday, March 21, with a healthful cooking demonstration from renowned local chef Brandon Miller. The free event takes place at 12:40 p.m. in the Mee Memorial Rose Garden, 300 Canal St., on the hospital grounds in King City. Designed to increase awareness of a disease that is more prevalent in Monterey County — 1 in 8 residents has diabetes, compared to 1 in 11 nationwide — the event will feature Miller creating a spring vegetable salad with yogurt dressing.
