SALINAS — The petition period for the official Signatures In-Lieu of Filing Fees in the Sept. 14, 2021, California Gubernatorial Recall Election is set to close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6. MONTEREY COUNTY — United Way Monterey County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service completed its 12th year with 1,232 federal and state tax returns filed for Monterey County residents, generating nearly $2,253,598 in refunds. The 2020 VITA program was made possible by 23 IRS-trained and certified volunteers who dedicated 1,617 hours during the 2020 tax season. UWMC continues to offer a free “Self-Prep Tax Filing” service, which is provided at the following locations via appointment only through September 2021: UWMC’s Monterey office, 60 Garden Court, Suite 350, Monterey; and Center for Employment Training’s Salinas office (strictly drop off by appointment; in-person assistance not available). MONTEREY — The 12th Annual Whalefest Monterey will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, 2022, according to an announcement last week.
