SOUTH COUNTY — The world’s top professional cyclists are coming to King City for the Amgen Tour of California on Tuesday, May 15, not once, but twice.
The riders will start on the 300 block of Broadway Street and ride out of town on First Street toward Highway 101. They will circle through the hills east of King City, riding by the Mesa Del Rey Airport on Metz Road as they pass through Greenfield en route to the finish line at Laguna Seca Raceway near Salinas.
To facilitate this premiere cycling race, several temporary road closures will be necessary. Following are a list of the road segments in King City that have temporary road closures:
• Broadway Street: Third Street to Vanderhurst Avenue — Monday, May 14, at 8 a.m. until approximately 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15
• Broadway Street: First to Third streets — Monday, May 14, at 8 p.m. until approximately 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15
• Broadway Street: Vanderhurst Avenue to Russ Street — Monday, May 14, at 8 p.m. until approximately 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15
• Vanderhurst Avenue, Second and Third streets: Lynn to Bassett streets — Monday, May 14, at 8 p.m. until approximately 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15
• First Street: Broadway Street to Highway 101 — Tuesday, May 15, 10:05 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
• Airport Road: Bitterwater Road to Metz Road — Tuesday, May 15, 12:20 p.m. until 12:45 p.m.
In Greenfield, Elm Avenue from Second to 13th streets will be closed for part of the race day as the cyclists work their way toward Arroyo Seco Road and ultimately to the Laguna Seca Raceway.
The California Highway Patrol will temporarily close the Highway 101 ramps in King City as the cyclists take the First Street overpass to the Mesa Verde frontage road.
The following parking lots in King City will also be closed Monday, May 14, 8 p.m. until approximately 12 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15: southwest corner of Lynn and Third streets; southeast corner of Broadway and Second streets; Hartnell College Lot; and Lynn Street, east of Vanderhurst Avenue.
Come join the cheering crowds that will gather at the starting line. King City will be the only location in the race to view both a Stage Start ceremony and the race in full speed in the same city.
Morning festivities begin at 8:30 a.m. and the race start is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. The race will re-enter the city at Airport Drive and Metz Road at approximately 1 p.m. In between, spectators may view the progress of the race on the big screen at King City Cinemas.
