SALINAS VALLEY — On March 21, around 11 p.m., a Greenfield Police officer patrolling Patriot Park discovered a large gathering in a vineyard in the 41000 block of Elm Avenue, adjacent to the park, just outside Greenfield.

Upon approaching, more than 40 individuals fled the scene in various vehicles.

“It was later determined that this gathering was related to cockfighting, an illegal activity that is strongly condemned due to its cruel nature and the abuse of animals involved,” police said.

Fourteen roosters were recovered, but sadly, one rooster was found dead within a makeshift “arena.”

The incident has been turned over to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the Monterey County SPCA’s Humane Investigations for further investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this case should contact the Sheriff’s Office or the SPCA.

“Together, we can help protect our community and stand against animal cruelty,” police said.
