KING CITY — More than 1,500 trick-or-treaters stopped by King City Recreation Department’s fifth annual Trunk or Treat on Monday at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City.

The family-friendly event featured businesses and organizations decorating the trunks of vehicles for Halloween and passing out candy to local youth.

King City Police Chief Keith Boyd and Fire Chief Russ Nichols worked alongside the fire department’s volunteer firefighters to prepare and serve more than 1,000 hotdogs for those in attendance, including hundreds of families dressed in costumes for the Oct. 31 event.

Over the past week, other spine-chilling activities to celebrate Halloween and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) took place locally and throughout South Monterey County.

La Cocina, an open-air market in King City, hosted a Dia de los Muertos celebration on Oct. 28, which included food, music and dancing, as well as a Catrina Contest with prizes.

Among this year’s performers were Pilar Mendoza’s Folkorico group called Arcoiris Cultural, made up of local children and young teenagers, from Greenfield.
