Mary Hutton, born September 27, 1925 passed away on Wednesday, November 07, 2018 surrounded by her family.

She was born in Oakland CA to Irish immigrant, Jeremiah and Emma Sexton. She graduated from Holy Names High School and Holy Names College. After obtaining her teaching credential, she taught in Oakland public schools for several years.

She met her future husband John while at an engagement party. They were married in Oakland, California, in 1950. They then moved to King City where John started his law practice and they started their family of five children.

Mary was very active in her community in various areas. She took a great love for mentoring people in her community by volunteering with many organizations. She taught Red Cross Swimming and catechism; she was director of Loaves & Fishes through the Catholic Church. She was very active with the Monterey County Library Board and played an instrumental role in relocating the King City Branch to its current location. Her Catholic faith was very important to her and she was a long-time parishioner and supporter of St. John’s Catholic Church in King City.

Mary loved reading, travel, golf, bridge, golf, entertaining; did we mention golf? She played golf and bridge for over 50 years and really enjoyed the close friendships and camaraderie, throughout the years. Mary’s one disappointment in life was that she never scored that “HOLE IN ONE”.

She was a lifelong reader and thoroughly enjoyed her book club. All her kids knew that early afternoons were her quiet time to read and she read every day. One of her greatest joys was planning great parties for family and friends, and she was known for being a fabulous cook. She loved her many vacations with her family to places like Lake Tahoe, Palm Desert, Santa Cruz, and especially the beach house in Cayucos.

She is survived by her children, John (Cindy), Jim (Lizann), Tom (Susan), Paul (Cristina), Nora (Bill) and her grandchildren, Kendra, Nathanial, Jeremy, Ben, Matt and Julia, and two great-grand-children Luca and Isabella. She is also survived by her nephews Steve and Danny Sexton and her niece Christine Waljer-Sexton. She was preceded in death by her husband John of 56 years, her grandsons Alex and Patrick, and her brother Gerald and sister “Sister” Shirley.

Mary had a strong and independent nature, and you knew where you stood with her. She will be missed for being a loyal friend, loving mother, great story teller and her sharp Irish wit. She had a deep love for adventure and travel to many countries all around the world with her husband, John. Mary had a great life and great health right up until the last few months of her life. It was a life well lived and she will be deeply missed by family and friends.
