New stage lights installed at Stanton Theatre

KING CITY — Sol Treasures will present performances of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” next Saturday and Sunday at the Robert Stanton Theatre in King City, while the Monterey Pops will salute local vets there with a free concert of patriotic music on Nov. 10.

In addition, King City High School bands will perform at the theater after Thanksgiving, and young artists of the Monterey County Dance Theatre will leap across its stage to the strains of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” in December.

None of these events involving hundreds of children could take place without the community’s support for the theater.

Townspeople saved the Robert Stanton Theatre 35 years ago when the stage became too dangerous to use. They raised money and gave unnumbered hours of labor to buy equipment and make repairs.

Those efforts — through the Southern Monterey County Center for the Performing Arts nonprofit — are ongoing. Most recently, SoMoCo Center expended $3,708 for stage work lights. Other lighting upgrades are scheduled for the near future.

These projects will proceed side by side with King City High School’s commitment to replace worn curtains installed decades ago.

“There’s much to do,” SoMoCo Center board members said. “Please join members of the SoMoCo Center in our mission to restore, maintain and improve the historic Robert Stanton Theatre. Come to the great events — especially the free Nov. 10 concert — and help us out with your contributions.”
